If it's for fedora core 7, why has it got the number 8 intertwined with the letter f?

It's not an 8, it's an infinity (which was part of the design for Fedora Core 5 as well).

I don't know what it's supposed to symbolise.

(And it's Fedora Core 6 I've just installed, not 7. My mistake; I've corrected my original post now.)

What I found striking about it is the presence of the enzyme separating the DNA strands. You see the DNA double helix all over the place, but it's rare to see it shown with an enzyme working along it outside of the field of biochemistry.

Oh, that's what it's supposed to be! I thought it was a stylised squid.
