I've been asked to be חתן תורה [Bridegroom of the Law on the festival of Simḥas Torah] at Assif. This is quite an honour.

Depends on your shul. In Newcastle when I grew up, they always gave חתן תורה and חתן בראשית to the Grand Old Machers of the shul; however my father got חתן תורה when he was first married. My brother got one of them in Yakar (http://www.yakarkehilla.org.uk/), which is smaller and less macher-oriented. (Admittedly, it's possible he was chair of the kehilla at the time; I can't remember for certain.)

Assif (http://www.assif.org) is also small and peer-oriented; it was founded by contemporaries of mine seven years ago. I presume giving me this honour is a way of saying thank you for, since I started coming two years ago, being a regular and turning up early (helping ensure a minyan for borchu on such weeks as we get it), for always collecting the chumashim up and putting them away, for attending committee meetings and being the webmaster, for gabbaiing and for being the default gabbai and chazan for Friday night when there's not one rota'd.
