Exodus 28:30, at the end of the description of how to make the breastplate of judgement, says:
Which is all well and good, but what exactly are the Urim and the Thummim? The Samaritan text has an extra bit about their construction; does this tell us what they actually are?
You shall put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goes in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.
Answer: no.
You shall make the Urim and the Thummim and you shall put on the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goes in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.
