Deuteronomy 19:15 |
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity,
or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of
two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the
matter be established.
|
|
The use of חַטָּאת for "sin" is unusual; the word normally means "sin-offering".
The Samaritan text here substitutes the usual word,
Deuteronomy 20:17 |
But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and
the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites,
and the Jebusites; as the Lord your God has commanded you:
|
|
Readers familiar with the nations of pre-Israelite Canaan will notice that the
Girgashites are missing from this list. The Samaritan text restores them,
along with rearranging the order.
