Ooh, this shiur on the origin of the myth (in the sociological sense) of the miracle of the oil associated with Chanukah is fascinating (and ought to appeal particularly to
liv). The sources to go with it may be found here.
Interesting to see that Dr Kulp's/Vered Noam's reading of the sources ties in with Sean Kingsley's assertion that the eight-branched (including the shamash) menorah in the Temple that has been a symbol of Judaism since it was first represented on coins struck by the Hasmonean kingdom only dated back to the Maccabees' victory, because the previous one had been filched from the Temple by the Seleucids.
