To Berwick and back, by train and bike respectively
Friday, July 22nd, 2005 06:47 pmWell, I did it. Berwick to Newcastle (direction chosen so I would have a tailwind), via the Northumbrian Coastal Route (very pretty, as
livredor and
compilerbitch can attest to); total distance seventy-five and a half miles. (That's ten more than if I'd gone straight along the A1, but that was boring; I know that route inside out and it doesn't involve the seaside (much) or ruined castles).
The first sixty miles were enjoyable; the remaining fifteen increasingly difficult (until I got to Cramlington, after which it was almost all downhill). I only cycled those last fifteen (as opposed to getting the train back from Morpeth) as a matter of principle. :o) But that's still two and a half times further than the furthest I'd cycled before today.
I don't feel particularly exhausted at the present, but I'm sure I'm going to start paying with it by being too tired to do anything in the evenings, starting probably tomorrow. Or at least that's what happens when I've cycled to work after a period without cycling, without working my way up to it.
Now, all you people who'd said they'd sponsor me can pay up.
Oh, wait a second... damn. I didn't say I would do this for charity. ;^) (But anyone who wants to give me money to cover my £13 train fare to Berwick is welcome to (and a sucker besides. ;^b))
