My school had a playing field on-site, but sometimes we would use another field, one of a series of several divided from the Town Moor by the Great North Road, known as the Intake. I tried yesterday looking up this sense of this word in my dictionaries; the Collins Concise didn't have it, but the first edition OED did:
bluepork and
compilerbitch will be familiar with this usage...
Intake, sb.I suspect of my readers, only
2. (Chiefly north. dial.) A piece of land taken in from a moorland, common, etc; an inclosure.
