בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים
Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 11:41 amI wanted to post this between Simchas Torah and Shabbas Bereishis, but there is no time this year between Simchas Torah and Shabbas Bereishis, so I had the choice of posting it before Simchas Torah, when it would feel strange, because we'd still be leading up to פ׳ וְזאֹת הַבְּרָכָה, or after Shabbas Bereishis, when it would already refer to the previous week's sedra...
Anyhow, there's a famous bit of Talmud where Rabbi Akiva pronounces that the verse, "Love your fellow man as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18) is the most important verse in the Torah (or at any rate, an important principle, which is what he actually says), and then Ben Azai responds, "The verse, 'God created man in God's image' (Genesis 5:1) is an even greater principle." From this, we learn the respect one has to have for every other person, because they too were created in God's image.
Here, however, is Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello, taking an altogether different, more cynical interpretation of this verse:
And no, I am absolutely not setting a precedent here of posting a music video pertaining to each week's sedra throughout the coming year.
