aviva_m and I were in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and observing large numbers of statues from Babylon bearing untranslated inscriptions; and I said:
So the other day, when it was my birthday, as well as getting me the present I'd asked for (and another one pertaining (indirectly) to custard too),
aviva_m got me an Assyrian primer! How cool is that!?
It's always a risk receiving a present that you haven't asked for; you never know if it might not end up being something you have to pretend to be pleased with. But in this case I was absolutely chuffed to bits; I hope I can do as well for
aviva_m when it's her birthday.
(As well as having
aviva_m come visit, I also celebrated my birthday by throwing a big Shabbos meal on what
aviva_m aptly described as second-day yom tov (guests included
bluepork and Mrs Pork, and
snjstar and, ah, Mr Star, plus some others WANOLJ); and
bluepork invited us over for Friday night too. Then we finished the weekend with a walk through Golders Hill Park, Hampstead Heath extension and the Hill Garden and Pergola, which is always nice. Spring is finally in the air, and the sun shone on us and all was good.)
I'm beginning to think I ought to teach myself cuneiform in the same way as I taught myself the Arabian alphabet, to look for Hebrew cognates (quite a few of which I was able to spot in transliterated names).Actually, I'd already said that a month earlier, when we'd seen some cuneiform in the British Museum.
