I have a hospital appointment tomorrow (nothing major, don't worry). Officially in my workplace, we're supposed to take doctor's appointments in our own time rather than registering them as sick leave. Whilst this doesn't seem unreasonable for when I'm able to make an appointment outside of office hours, it seems wrong to me for when I'm given a hospital appointment in the middle of the day.

What do you think? What does your workplace rule? And do you abide by it? [Reply anonymously if you prefer.]

We would treat it as sick leave (actually "personal leave" these days), although you might be expected to take only the minimum time off. Alternatively, it is also common to just take the time off and work back later to catch up since 1) we all work silly hours anyway and 2) we only get a finite amount of "personal leave" each year and sometimes it's good to save it up, especially if you have small children prone to bringing home new and wonderful germs from daycare.

I go every months to 3 or 4 appointments. I wouldn't be able to do that if I were employed. They just lots of test again and again which is just a waste of time and a waste of my money I use for traveling to London. I took ages getting appointments at all. By the time I got them I have already moved to St Albans. But certain things are in London and not available in my area. If I had a job I would loose it. When you only go once a year to a hospital appointment I don't think you loose anything. I would get a sick note.
