Some while ago I posted about an idea I'd had: to take a photograph of myself in the same pose from the same place every day for several months, and then assemble them into a video of my hair growing as you watch.
Well, I took the photos between 27 March and 13 August last year, but boy did I underestimate how much work it was going to involve to bring the project to fruition: my head was in a different posture each time, so I needed to take lots of photos, and then select the ones which matched best. (If I did it again now, I'd use a webcam and onion-skin between its output and the last photo before taking the shot.) Then I needed to crop and scale every photo so the two were aligned as best they could be. (The result is not perfect, but it's good enough: I'm satisfied with the result.) This ended up being a sufficiently large task that I didn't complete it until I had a couple of days to devote to it this week, which is why you're not seeing it until now.
Somewhat to my surprise, I discovered you couldn't really see much evidence of my hair growing at all; this is because I brushed it into place before taking my photos, which flattened it into place. (It does become more visible if you play the thing at one frame per photo, but then the whole thing's over in four seconds!) One thing which became apparent early on, though, was that you could see my sideburns visibly growing, so I decided to stop trimming them, and grow them longer than I've ever done before.
And this is the result:
It's actually my first ever upload to YouTube.
