Great Misunderstood Proverbs of my youth, number 1432

"A stitch in time saves nine?" But what can that mean? I know we talk about the fabric of spacetime, but how can you put a stitch through it? And how can doing save nine people? Who are these nine people, and how did they get into such a situation that only putting a stich in time could save them?

This proverb obviously refers to sewing your alarm clock back together so that it will be functional in time to wake you at the appropriate hour in the morning.
