I'm well confused
Sunday, February 11th, 2007 08:15 pmAs I posted last week, I've just had to reinstall Fedora Core 5 (the operating system I use) on epicyclic. This time I followed the beaten track in installing everything I use that does not come with the system, rather than trying to beat my own, and making a bit of a mess of it.
Now, the version of Firefox I was using beforehand, which I thought was the one that came out of the box, 1.5.0.1, but might actually have been Firefox 2, was refusing to display vowellated Hebrew properly, showing the vowels between the consonants rather than above/below/inside them. This page says that's a problem which won't be fixed in the main Firefox releases until early 2007 at the earliest, though there is an alternate version of Firefox there that fixes this. However, I've just noticed that the Firefox I'm now using (1.5.0.1) does not display vowellated Hebrew perfectly. How bizarre. Stranger still, whilst the old one, whilst not displaying vowellated Hebrew properly, did display (unvowellated) Arabic fine; the new one (which may of course be older, version-wise) does not display Arabic properly, showing every letter in its general form (rather than the initial, medial, final or isolated as appropriate).
Still, if Hebrew's now working, it's probably best not to tinker with it any further. I can live with the dodgy Arabic, I suppose.
