New pedals!
Monday, May 21st, 2007 07:42 pmLast week was supposed to be my week for getting things done. Instead, the bike shop failed to get back to me to tell me the sandals for my SPDs (clip-on pedals) had arrived, the glazier who was supposed to come and give me an estimate failed to turn up, and... something else, I forget.
This evening, I finally collected my SPDs and sandals. This means I can now consider myself a Proper Cyclist, even though I own no lycra. (Well, apart from in my lounge suit, but that doesn't count.)
Cycling with the SPDs is odd. I've always cycled with the pedal under the centre of my foot, so the force of pushing down goes straight into the pedal. The SPDs, however, clip on to the front of the sandal, almost underneath the toe. This means a certain amount of muscular tension is required to hold the foot straight (rather than the heel going down and the toe up). I suspect this will lead to unexpected muscles aching during my first week cycling with them. Still, at least I've got an easy run-in: one day cycling to work tomorrow, followed by the two day gap of Shavuos, then another day on Friday before the weekend.
The question is whether I can survive the first week or two without failing to unclip my feet when coming to a stop and falling over. Well, time will tell.
