I appear to have got chromatography, or something like it, going on in my leg! The bruise on the outside of my right thigh now appears a livid purple smear almost half a foot in length... with the emphasis on "appears": The actual bruise—the bit that hurts and is tender to the touch—is actually further up my hip, and a pale enough yellow that, next to the purple stain, is easy to overlook completely.

I'm surprised you didn't come across chromatography in chemistry at school. It's where you, say, put a drop of ink on filter paper, then dip one end of the filter paper in water; and as the water travels along the filter paper it carries the different components of the ink along with it at different speeds, depending on the sizes and shapes of the different molecules. It can thus be used as a way of separating a mixture of chemicals out into its individual components.

I also have never heard of it. Our lessons were rubbish especially those they often skipped some years like chemestry, geography, biology and physics. I am not suprised that Germany had the worst result in the pisa study.

I did not know that badly bruised. I hope you heal soon.

This sounds familiar, not as an experiment, but as something seen when one accidentally spills a drop or two of water onto a paper where there is writing in ink. Perhaps we learned about it in chemistry but were never given the name? I took a really low level Chemistry in high school(secondary school) because I didn't feel like exerting the extra effort to take on higher level Chemistry(especially since I wasn't so good at math and science). Then again, this sounds like something that in theory at least, could be taught in primary school. Maybe not. Regardless, thank you for the explanation, and I hope that your leg feels better and less bruised soon!
