Today is a year since I got my new bike. When I first got it, I did not know how much I was cycling. I knew it had been 1200 miles a year when I managed to snap the mileometer off my old bike, but I did not know how much I'd been doing since. So, rather than getting a new mileometer, I made a little CGI script at work, and updated it via a webform every time I cycled in.

I expected to find I was doing between 1200 and 1600 miles a year; as the year drew on, though, it became apparent I was going to scrape through the 1600 mile boundary. Then, late in the year, I got fed up with sitting in delayed trains on the Tube, and bumped up from cycling three times a week to cycling four times a week; so the total figure ended up at 1808 miles (assuming I get home all right today :o)). If I hadn't gone to Jerusalem for three and a half weeks, I'd have ended up within twenty miles of the magical 2000 mile figure (and if, say, I hadn't just gone to Nice, etc, I'd have passed that figure too.)

Now we'll have to see how much I manage in the next year, cycling four times a week the whole year (though I suspect I'll have to drop to three in the middle of winter, in order to make up with long Tube days the time lost on cycling days short enough to cycle both to and from work in daylight).

Since 25 August 2006:

Weeks covered: 53
Average weekly journeys: 2.58
Average weekly mileage: 34.11 miles
Average mileage on full weeks: 41.79 miles
Total mileage: 1808 miles

... but while you are at it, can we see statistics for the following, please:

1) Average time spent stopped at traffic lights
2) A comparison of your average speed on cycle lanes, versus on the road
3) Average of energy burned per mile cycled, before and after purchase of your special (needs) clip on cycling sandals
4) A profile of your speed over distance hyperlinked in for every trip

That would be more interesting.

You definately have too much time on your hands...

Well, I need to do something to fill the long dark lunch hours.

I think you overestimate how much time the above took me: probably no more than a couple of lunches. And the bar chart, if it was not obvious, was neither hand-crafted nor produced by my program, but autogenerated by piping my data through a third-party piece of software (gnuplot), which I already had familiarity with due to using it to make graphs for my Ph.D. thesis.
