In Tottenham Court Road station there are, next to each other (deliberate provocation?) tourism posters for Greece and Turkey.

Both countries are absolutely drenched in history and culture—Çatalhöyük, one of the oldest cities in the world; the labyrinth where Theseus bull-danced for his life before King Minos; Troy, the siege of which inspired one of the world's great pieces of literature; the rock-cut inscription naming King Midas, the original Goldfinger (or one of his namesakes); the ruins of Athens and all the other cities of classical Greece; Pella, the Macedonian city which spawned Alexander the Great, who conquered the known world; Constantinople, shining capital of the Roman Empire for a thousand years and more; the glory and majesty of the Hagia Sophia; the ruins of Ephesus, where the ancient vampire lurked (no, hang on a tick; that's just in my story); the history of the Greek War of Independence, of the bloody First World War campaign in Gallipoli, and of the emergence of modern Turkey from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire; the list just goes on and on...

And all either country can find to advertise themselves in a London Underground poster is sun, sea, sand and surf.

Sickening, isn't it?
