This story, about a man who was the only survivor to escape from a sunk submarine during the War, will be of interest to anyone who's read Cryptonomicon.
The sub in question was at 171 feet down; it refers to another escape, of two men, from a sub at 200 feet. Bischoff's escape, in Cryptonomicon, was from <skims book looking for information> 154m, which is to say 505 feet. Which raises questions, then, about whether he could have made it.
A quick google reveals the record for survival in an unaided ascent from a sunken submarine is 210–215 feet.
And now I want to reread Cryptonomicon, which isn't going to happen any time soon, as I have twenty unread books on my shelf, and am 85 pages into a book ten times that length.
