I got a message today on my Wall on Facebook:

IT REALLY DOES WORK, DONT MISS OUT!

I thought: That's not like Alice, to engage in viral marketing like that. So I went and looked at her page, and she's written in big letters:

Alice is alarmed about the last wall post that was sent to some people because it wasn't sent from her! Whoever got it just ignore!

So it looks like I was right about my paranoia about Facebook applications all along: she's evidently got the Facebook equivalent of a virus.

I also had something like that. It said there 6 people interested in me. I got a date webpage. It was only for getting me on that webpage. If I want then I choose a Jewish one. Thank you very much!

In my opinion, Facebook has been unacceptably spammy for several months now. It's as much social hacking as actual mechanically generated spam, but the effect is the same, that I see stupid, multiply repeated messages all over the place and the S/N is too low to bother. The walled garden concept doesn't work once apps are introduced, even if security were perfect which it fairly self-evidently isn't.

I also got that message and immediately deleted it from my wall without clicking on the link.

I want the old Facebook back.
