Newcastle Day Limmud

After I failed to make the deadline of the end of November for submitting a talk proposal for the next Newcastle Day Limmud, the organiser's wife (and for all I know, co-organiser) wrote to me suggesting I give a talk about Masorti Judaism.

That's a good idea; I should have thought of it myself. (Mind you, if I thought I was in for a savaging when I tried to do the explain-Masorti spiel to my family at Pesach the other year, I'm sure that'll be nothing when I've got a substantial wodge of the Newcastle Orthodox community to contend with. I shall have to start pyching myself up for it now!)

It's Limmud. I doubt that a substantial crowd of Orthodox people will descend on a talk about Masorti in order to heckle. That's really not in the spirit of Limmud. Families are a different thing, they're directly threatened by the fact that you're Masorti and not Orthodox. My best guess is that those who really hate everything Masorti will simply pick another talk to go to in that slot.

Not to heckle, but to deliver challenging questions (which is in the spirit of Limmud). And from the point of view of an Orthodox person, any non-Orthodox theology is going to be open to attack at well-defined points of vulnerability.

I'm family, and I don't feel threatened, directly or indirectly by his Masorti'ism.

Fair point, but I assume you weren't responsible for [livejournal.com profile] lethargic_man feeling savaged at Pesach.
