It looks like I hadn't been checking my tyres for embedded glass or stones as often as I should have been; I had no idea my rear tyre was completely worn through until the inner tube blebbed out through it. Before I could get to the side of the road to stop and investigate, there was a loud bang, like popping a balloon*, and that was the end of my inner tube and outer tube both.

Damn. (Cue a fifty minute walk home.)

Note to self: next time, make sure to replace the rear tyre before it reaches the 6000 mile mark.

* When this happened to me once before, ten years ago, I was inflating the tyre and my head was next to it; you could see my claw marks in the ceiling afterward.

<examines rear wheel> That's odd; the place where the inner tube blew is nowhere near where the outer tube wore through.

Tomorrow I'll take my tyre to a bike shop, and say, "I'll have one of these, please, but without the hole in." :o)

I'm amazed

Did you really go 6000 miles on one tyre?! My bike's only done something like 4500 miles, and I've lost count of the number of tyres I've gone through. Then again, that might be to do with the fact that my bike is a different style, and the tyres are much smaller to start with.

What you said. I also use tyres with considerable, what's-it-called, tracking(?), simply because I used to go through so many.

Also, what the hell does "bleb" mean? Is that even a real word?!

Actually, scrub that. I shouldn't try to call you, of all people, out on words. I'm sure you will give me the etymology anyway!

Yes it is a real world (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bleb?rdfrom=Bleb). I first encountered it in the context of what cytoplasm does in time-lapse photography, but it also nicely describes what a tyre does when it goes.
