Anyone for a DreamWidth account? One invite code going!

what is it?

I just read the faq and so forth on DreamWidth, and I'm completely clueless on how this differs from Livejournal, or, for that matter, any other blog hosting site.

Care to tell?

BTW, if I comment on your blog as it appears on Facebook, does my comment appear here too?

A while ago LiveJournal got taken over by a new company that proceeded to run it in a more aggressively commercial manner than before (not to mention making almost the entire technical development team redundant). Quite a lot of people said at the time that LiveJournal was going down the pan, so we should all decamp to somewhere else. This has happened several times beforehand; the difference is that DreamWidth appears to have actually taken off as a result.

I, along with most of the people on my reading list have remained on LJ, but some of my friends have moved completely to DW. I have a DW account primarily for commenting on people's blogs on DW, though I could use my LJ account for that via OpenID if I wanted. ATM I have to have two browser tabs open, one for reading my LJ reading list, and one for my DW reading list; but DW are planning to implement functionality to allow me to do both from the one place. I reserve the right to migrate my blog entirely to DW in the future, though, should I want to. (It is possible to migrate a blog in its entirety.)

The reason DW looks so similar to LJ is that it was started by a couple of people from LJ, and the LJ code is itself open source. (Apparently one symptom of how people don't like the way LJ is now run is that though the code is still freely available, all the pointers that tell you how to get at it have gone!)

DW are planning to remain user-focused, and so rather than trying to get the maximum number of users, are handing out invite codes on a slow but steady basis.

As for Facebook, no, comments on the importation of my blog postings onto Facebook appear only on Facebook (and comments on LJ appear only on LJ). I prefer people to comment on LJ—it makes my archiving easier—but spme people who don't have LiveJournal accounts have sent me comments on Facebook in the past.

Thanks for your explanation.

I do think that LiveJournal is a confusing site, in thorough need of an overhaul. The page presents a different "look" each time you click on a different part of it.

You would be better giving the invitation to someone who actually posts stuff, rather than me, I guess!

I keep playing with the idea of blogging, but quickly coming to the conclusion that there's not a lot of point, because those people who I want to update on my life get those updates when I see them anyway! The exception would be if I wanted to use the blogging experience as a practice for writing in general, in which case I wouldn't go into it unless I on a fully committed basis, with a resolve to post regularly. But then, I'd still need to make a decision as to the kind of material to post.

Anyway, if I ever do get to that stage there are loads of blogging sites available if I don't want to do it on my own domain anyway. (I haven't got one, before you ask)!
