Supert✡va

I got friended on Facebook by someone who was a volunteer for Supert✡va, "a 100% free Jewish dating site; a platform designed to keep Jewish only marriage alive", trying to "get me on board".

I'm not sure I approve of that kind of marketing... but OTOH it's better than spam; and a free dating site invented by and aimed at people fed up of having to pay money to meet potential partners can't be a bad thing, so I thought I'd give it a plug here, and let those of you who might be interested make up your own minds about it.

I am very, very suspicious of that site. It looks Aish-y to me, and all this stuff about "the Jewish Nation" and "Jewish only marriage" is creepy. TANSTAAFL and all that; I can understand that you don't want to pay to join a dating site, but free dating sites have to be paid for somehow.

Some are paid for by advertising, but advertising online is becoming more and more of a losing proposition; there's no point having something that's "free" if it's also not economically viable. This one is at least trying to pretend that it's paid for by charitable donations, but either it's funded by someone big and scary (eg Aish, Chabad, or worse), or it's genuinely just some private individual who thinks, oh, it only takes a few hundred pounds and a few hours to set up a website these days. Do you really want to trust some hobbyist with a copy of Frontpage with all your personal information? Does this person actually have the skills to prevent the site from being flooded with spammers and other nasties?

I wouldn't touch it. I'd rather pay for J-Date, because at least I'd know what I was getting and have some hope that they knew how to run a dating site securely.

Im a member of supertova and this blog doesnt make any sense. You are saying that there is no revenue for free sites; but then you are saying that supertova is all about the revenue (even though, there isnt any revenue).

Im going to be very direct and call you an idiot. The website is 100% free for the Jewish community. I think actions speak louder than words. Only a gentile would post something like that. Most likely, you are not even Jewish; just an idiot.

Thank you for your even-handed and constructive criticism. I'm glad you took the time to consider the consequences of your words before posting on the blog of someone you've never met, who had previously been friendly in theory towards Supert✡va, and insulting his friends rather than engaging in friendly discussion.

Fortunately, I do not intend to judge Supert✡va by its members; just to reflect that idiot is as idiocy does...

Thanks for sticking up for me; I decided I wasn't going to feed the trolls by replying to that anon comment. But honestly, I think you have a case of astroturf here. I don't think there just happen to be a couple of members of Supertova who just coincidentally happened on your post and decided to post passionate defences of the site. I suspect it's part of a marketing ploy; given this site was advertised in the first place through Facebook quasi-spam, whoever's behind it is obviously reasonably savvy about social networking. So they've set up a search engine alert to look for any blog posts where anyone is critical of the site, ready to respond with "oh, I'm just a random member but I think it's great!!!!"

I think you're attributing too much organisation to them. I mentioned to the person who friended me on Facebook that I would blog about Supert✡va; I think she just mentioned that to someone else rather than having a search engine alert.

I also think both comments came from the same person, pretending to be two people: they have the same IP address and the same inability to use apostrophes.

I had experience with dating sites and just give up. I only get those I definitely don't want.

Im a member of supertova.com too. It's great site developed by good, young, and motivated people. The person in charge of the site is prob one of the most determined individuals ive ever met. Join it and see for yourself. Its free, so you have nothing to lose. You dont need to blog about it. Just form your own opinion.

Agreed with the other post. Actions speak louder than words. Who are you going to believe? The person making a difference and making this free? Or some loser who has nothing better to do than complain all day?

Think about it.

a mean spirited response

I put myself on Supertova, picture & profile. Hardly any females from my area, so it did not get me a response or any chance to try to meet a local (CO) Jewish woman. I contacted the person running the site to request that I be taken off it as it was a useless to me, no ones fault just so few women from my area on this site. He responded with hostility and by insulting me. THis was absolutely uncalled for. I never wish any more contact with him or his site.
