The most accepted etymology of "OK" is that it derives from orl korrekt, part of a fad for misspelling things that was popular in the late 1830s.

Hmm, I wonder whether this fad correlated with the distribution of daguerrotypes of cats at all...

In other news, I had the idea (whilst trying to get back to sleep at ten past three in the morning) the other day of a retelling of the Judith story set during the American Civil War, based purely on the fact the name of its (fictional) setting, Bethulia, translates into English as "Virginia".

(I have no interest in doing this retelling myself; there's way too much USAn Civil War fiction already, and I'm not really interested: it's not my country, and not my civil war. And I wouldn't be surprised if this idea has been done already, though a very quick Google doesn't point to anything in that regard...)
