Chanukah candles have to burn half an hour into, or at any rate during, the night. This means on Friday night, when you light them an hour before nacht, the little candles you buy in boxed sets aren't long enough; you need bigger candles.

This is the case every year... so how come you never see candles on sale for this purpose, larger than normal Chanukah candles, but smaller than Shabbos candles, and shaped to fit in standard-sized candle holes in one's menorah?

You do. We have them. We use them every year.

I think I one year did, but normally I end up making my own by chopping Shabbos candles in two. Certainly this year I couldn't see any in Kosher Kingdom or Kay's. (Admittedly, I didn't ask, though.)

Here in West Rogers Park, Chicago, you can get them. They're a ripoff. You can just use a Shabbat candle or a tea light.

Some friends of ours use pop cans with tea lights on top for all their Hanukkah lights. I like the idea. The Eshet Hayil says we can do that next year. She thinks I'll forget, but I won't.

Speaking of my wonderful wife (known to shulfolk as Batya and to everyone else as Barbara) and Hanukkah, our sort-of tenth anniversary is the last day of Hanukkah. In 2000, the last day of Hanukkah was also the last business day of the civil year, so a retired judge (the cousin of a friend) married us at a pizza place for tax and insurance purposes. He wouldn't take money, but he agreed to accept a free share in the pizza. In the conversation afterward, I said something about our real wedding at the shul, which would be taking place in February. The judge sternly said, "Young man, this **is** your real wedding."

Not of interest to you or your readers, but I'm [sigh] still in love, so I'm using that as an excuse to annoy people with my self-centredness. ("Self-centredness" started out as a typo. As a Yank, I meant to type "self-centeredness." But instead of admitting it's a typo, I'll pretend it was a courtesy to my east-of-the-pond siblings.)

I have to stick my candles on the Chanukiah. Even the smallest Chanukah candle don't fit. When I was forced to live in Germany with my parents again I used birthday candles as you could not buy Jewish stuff in Bonn. They really fit but are a lot shorter then the standard Chanukah candles. I heard there is hardly anything kosher to buy in Germany in general. Now I am in St Albans and you can't get anything Jewish here either. At least I have train going directly to London.
My tiny Chanukiah could not hold longer and bigger candles even if I find them.
