The pinger of the ping bell on my bike having snapped off a little while ago, I went in search of a replacement, and succumbed to the temptation of getting a bugle horn. It cost twice the price of a ping bell, and also considerably more than a conventional bell, but it was worth every penny, for the sheer fun of sounding it. I almost find myself looking forward to having pedestrians step in my way now, and when they do, their annoyance at getting honked at is often rapidly displaced by amusement at being honked at by something which sounds like it came off a car from a century ago. Indeed, one pedestrian who was a little way in front of me when I sounded it yesterday called out at me as I passed "Do it again!", and laughed when I obliged.

In other news, as my German slowly gets better,* my Hebrew is, as I feared, suffering, as I am no longer putting the time into attempting to read שער למתחיל (despite the fact my use of my Hebrew flash card program throughout the day and evening continues).

* Albeit that my speed of both comprehension and speaking remains several times too slow for real conversation, because I'm not practising using it anything near like enough. What I really need to do is go on a German ulpan. Yeah, right—in my Copious Free Time (as in, I don't think the motivation [livejournal.com profile] aviva_m has for me to learn German includes not having any time for her any more...).

And finally, to mark the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Wikipedia, I present to you my very first Wikipedia edit.

Well, I am not living 600 Miles away but you won't come to St Albans either. Are you trying to loose your friends? I lost contact with people who are not living in the country or I don't see anymore.

I don't think you're in any danger of losing contact with me.

As for visiting, it's all right for you, as a woman of leisure. I spent 7½ hours a day working. Add on three quarters of an hour cycling each way (plus time faffing with the bike), my lunchbreak, and an hour at home to shower and eat, and this leaves me only three and a half hours each evening for my own stuff. It would take me almost an hour to get to you, so if I came to visit, I would only be able to stay an hour and a half; it's hardly worth it for that as against the two hours' travel time it would cost.

You said you have no time. I assumed you have no time for anybody in general. I am surprised you have the time to travel hours to Germany by train not airoplane that is much more than to St Albans or anywhere else in the UK. You are not working every single day. A woman or girl with no job and not much money can't afford everything either. I am already worried that I spent a lot by traveling too often to London. I spent more than I get right now.

No, I prioritise the time. And my girlfriend gets higher priority than my other friends.

hell's bells

Did you know it's illegal to sell a bicycle without a bell on it?

Anyway, I never use the bell on my bike any more. I find it's far more courteous to say "excuse me" to folks I need to pass on the canal path and "thank you" as I pass them. Every time I use the bell, even if I'm quite far behind the object of my ringing, they seem to jump with such a fright that I feel bad about it.

And by the way, Repton the school is named after the village where it is located. Don't you think that should be on the wiki page too!?

Me, too. I rarely use the bell although I have a better one now. I usually cycle on the street that I do not disturb people. I had the experience that people jump out of the way and are annoyed that I dare cycling on the pavement. I am surprised that people were not frightened or annoyed by an old car horn.

Did you know it's illegal to sell a bicycle in which you brake by pedalling backwards (as is normal, I gather, in France)?

After wearing myself out cycling home today, could I possibly ask you to repeat what you told me yesterday about which protein supplements are treyf and which not?

The Wikipedia page for Repton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repton) today is indeed about the village; there are separate pages about the school and the game. The page I linked to above is the version from seven years ago, when Wikipedia had a very amateur feel to it; it has come on a long way since then!

Very short version:

All the Lucozade products are KLBD approved. You will want the Recovery powder which is a 3 to 1 mix of carbs and whey protein isolate. I can vouch that the tropical version tastes like something between a milkshake and fruit squash. It's ok.

There's a company in the US called InnerLife which claims it's product is OU certified. It doesn't seem to be sold in the UK, but they have offered to mail it to me. However, once the postage cost is factored in, it's no cheaper.

However, a friend just put me on to Myprotein.com, which is whey cheaper (sorry, couldn't resist that!) and which does a lot of kosher products, so I'm going to try some of their protein isolate products. I think the certification is OU, but I'm awaiting a call back from their customer services to confirm that.

If I run out of all that stuff, my top tip is to eat a hard boiled egg and a small handful of brazil nuts instead. Iirc you don't like egg, so fish or lean meat is a good substitute for the purposes of muscle recovery, but your body does take longer to absorb real food than liquid based supplements, and you only have about half an hour after exercise for the protein intake to make any difference. (Look up "protein window" if you want to know more about this).

Also, bear in mind that you can go over the top on all this. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of protein in a given time period, and it then needs more time to put it to use. Sleep is also a major factor.

That wasn't that brief in the end!

PS: Just got the callback from myprotein.com. They are certified by the Union of Orthodox Jewish American Congregations - that's the OU to you and me. Note that not all of their products are certified - you have to check on the website.

Honestly!

Amazon or Tesco's online for the Lucozade stuff.

and Myprotein.com for that.
