Naff or what?
Besides the silly animations of rain falling (from no clouds), and the dull brown colour (because apparently people found it easier to see the difference between light brown and dark brown than light green and dark green), it's essentially a southern bastard's projection, with the north severely foreshortened, such that it's considerably easier to see the weather differences between close-together places in the south like London and Southend than further away places in the north like Edinburgh and Dundee.
I was going to post this anyway, but I seem I'm not the only one to thing so: the Scottish nationalists have complained to the BBC for exactly the same reason!
