Today I fixed my bike, or at least now the mudguard is further away from the wheel, so it's spinning freely... but there's a crackling noise as the wheel spins, as if sand grains have got into the bearings. I don't know if that could be bad enough to seize the wheel up completely. I'll take it to the Cycle Surgery on my way home tomorrow (assuming the forecast snow doesn't stop me cycling at all)... but I'm going to be very nervous cycling it between now and then.

And doing an impression of the Statue of Liberty in the shower turned out to be surprisingly successful at keeping my right elbow dry (though not so good at getting my arms washed (or the space below my left shoulder blade)...

Is that your new bike you keep talking about? Was it very cheap or a normal price? Bikes under £100 usually don't last long. That is why I decided a year ago to send the Argos bike back and get a proper assembled one from a real bike shop. It was about £135 as they reduced the price.

Whoever sold you that bike go that seller take the bike and bang it over his head.

Well, the bike is nearly four and a half years old; I wouldn't expect anything to still be working in pristine state by then. I've done nearly ten thousand miles on it—more than I ever did on my last bike, which I wrote off after just 7000 miles—and already had to replace a number of components which had worn out.

I think the bike is doing well to get to that amount of mileage and you're definitely getting your money's worth out of it!

I'd say take care but I know you are sensible enough to be careful anyway. But it's a worry when you have to go so far on your bike in central London. Hope you get it sorted out.
