Somebody recommended me the other day a book other than Jane Eyre I should read before reading The Eyre Affair, but I don't seem to have written it down. Can anybody tell me what this is?

Well I hadn't even read Jane Eyre (although by osmosis and watching bits and pieces of various tv/movie adaptations I knew the story).
Didn't stop my from loving the book, and it does contain the most laugh out loud segment of any book I've read in the last 10 years.
The sequels I liked less and less, and have now stopped reading Fforde

Jasper fforde appears to be quite a clever man, and to be significantly more impressed with his cleverness than I am.

Well, it was you who recommended me the book in the first place!

Most of The Eyre Affair is in-jokes about the literary canon. I don't think there's any one book you particularly need to read first, but in general it's a lot funnier if you know the classics (as in the ones that people in the early 20th century thought that everyone should read).
