By the tail end of the noughties, the paint was flaking off the glasses I had bought earlier in the decade, and the reinforcing arm linking the lenses had snapped off altogether. "Get yourself some new glasses," my mother implored me, then, obviously not trusting that would have any effect on its own, added, "If you don't get new glasses, you'll not be able to get a girlfriend, you'll not be able to get a job!"

I, having my own views as to what constitutes need for replacement, ignored her (aside from trying to repaint the spectacles concerned myself, which, frankly, didn't improve the situation and I was as happy when the new paint wore off), and continued to wear my old glasses, which neither stopped me getting a new job nor getting a new girlfriend.

By earlier this year, however, one of the nosepieces had broken, irreparably, off my other glasses, and my eyesight had changed so much it was probably no longer legal for me cycle (or drive) in them. So I decided to get a new pair (which, me being myself, resembled the old pair), and switch my main and spare glasses.

That was about two or three months ago now. Since then, my mother has not noticed I am wearing new glasses, my girlfriend has not noticed I am wearing new glasses, and my employer has not noticed I am wearing new glasses. In fact, the only person who has is Clara WINOLJ (<waves>).

I'd say there's a salutary lesson to be learned there, were it not from the fact my second paragraph above demonstrates it is a lesson I had already learned in the first place.

I guess they look exactly like you old ones.
I usually only see poor people wearing old clothes and patched glasses. With poor I mean really depending on benefit only and having high debts in bills. You are not in that situation.
