After nearly eight years, epicyclic is dying, and will shortly be replaced. Which means I need a new name based on a universally accepted scientific theory which turned out to be completely wrong. So far I've had phlogiston (desktop, 2000-2004), luminiferous.aethernet (laptop, 2002-2007), epicyclic.aethernet (desktop, 2004-2012) and coronium (laptop, 2007-present).

Ideas I've had for the new machine include Vulcan, Piltdown and Clovis. Anyone got any other suggestions, or preferences?

Are you talking about your laptop or your real computer?

Lamark? Coronium?

http://blog.plover.com/math/major-screwups.html is Mark Dominus asking for some mathematical examples. The later adenda (linked at the bottom of the page) contain some examples, but none with a catchy widely-used name, alas.

I can't believe I'm being sucked into this... I don't get why you have to give your laptop a name at all. Seeing as you do, could you just call it "laptop"?! Anyway, here's some suggestions on your own theme, none of which took much googling to come with!:

Aether
Emmission
Miasma

Or, if you want to be controversial, Creationism, although I'm not sure if that counts as a scientific theory to start with.

Oops (on both fronts). Although, I think there's a certain charm to having a desktop called "laptop". It's like, a computer with aspirations!

Ooh. I'm actually getting into this, now!

How about these:

The island of California
Corpuscles
Netpunism
