Having come back from Prague with a small amount of coinage, it'll probably share the same fate as the francs I had left over last bar one time I came back from France, i.e. by the next time I'm in the country they'll probably be using euros.

Still, it did give me a silly idea for a currency conversion chart:

1 crown sterling= 10.84 Czech crowns
1 dollar sterling= 0.4415 US dollars
1 mark sterling= 1.9093 Deutschmarks
1 florin sterling= 0.3228 Dutch florins (guilders)

Ah, the fun of pre-decimal British currency units. :o)

Where do you get the current value of Deutschmarks and guilders? to 4dp., as well.

I think they fixed them when they switched over to Euros. So the DM and the guilder are set at the values they held at the switchover point. But I've never been all that good at understanding currency.

The Universal Currency Converter (http://www.xe.com/ucc). It does label them as being obsolete and fixed against the Euro.

EU States

Do you actually know which states are currently in the EU? My aunt was very surprised that she needed a visa for Hungary. I actually thought as well it was in the EU. As I broke off most of the contacts with my family in Germany I am not sure if she had an EU passport. If she still had an Iranian one I won't be surprised. She was never born there but according to her parents' status she got only an Iranian one at that time. I assume she managed to get a German passport meanwhile.
My parents had lots of coins as well the Hungarian currency. I got rid of all of them because I thought it had the Euros as well. I assume you might have the same problem I mean changing money to real bad currency and claiming for a visa. Did you need a visa for the Tschech Republic? I know they are not in the EU either.

You're wrong on both counts. As of last year, both the Czech Republic and Hungary are in the EU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union)*, but not in the Eurozone. Possibly they might join the Eurozone in a few years time.

I did not need a visa to get to the Czech Republic, and I would be surprised if one were needed for Hungary. (Hungary has apparently signed up to but not yet implemented the Schengen treaty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_treaty).)

Well, my aunt was very surprised, too. But maybe they are not that long in the EU. Maybe at that time you still needed a visa.
