The length of Pinḥās' life
Thursday, December 13th, 2012 12:50 pmAh, that's why the rabbis said Pinḥās b. El`azar was still around in the time of Yiftāḥ (Jephthah), 337 years after the time of the conquest of Canaan: because Judges 20:28 says he was still around 91 years later still.
Of course, this merely transfers the question, but possibly the answer to that is that the chapter order in Judges got scrambled, and the story in Judges 19–21 actually belonged at the beginning of the book. There's nothing internal to it to set it in time.
