I came home to find a fox lying on my doormat, to get out of the rain. I think it was napping; it took a moment to realise what was going on, then realised it was backed in a corner with a wall on two sides, a one-storey drop behind railings on the third and me on the fourth. If I'd thought quicker I'd have backed off to let it get to the stairs. Instead it squeezed through the railings and risked the drop. I hope it wasn't too badly hurt—foxes aren't cats—but it ran off regardless.

Fortunately, I know from my undergraduate lectures that smaller animals handle drops better—mass scales up by length to the third—but even so. Still, it will teach it a lesson to let itself get backed into a corner like that.
