I posted this on Facebook last week, but not here; I thought I'd repost it here before Nelson Mandela's death becomes completely old news.

Via [livejournal.com profile] megamole, Woolworths hosts a flashmob rendition by the Soweto Gospel Choir of "Asimbonanga", a song written during Mandela's incarceration as a call for his freedom (lyrics here):

This is sumptious... and deeply reverential to the late Mr Mandela. I think—despite not having done so when I was in South Africa in April—I'm really going to have to get some mambazo music. A few tracks on "Graceland" aren't enough.

Oh that Johnny Clegg song - it was a hit in France when I was an aupair there, France always having had more interesting popular music than the UK ;) Funny that it ends up being a song written by a white dude - though he did do a lot of campaigning etc. And it was written for Nelson Mandela I guess.

I knew it because it was a hit in France while I was an aupair there ;) I actually saw Johnny Clegg live that year at a big free concert in Paris.
