Listening to Mark Knopfler's Sailing to Philadelphia, it occurred to me to wonder where Knopfler lived nowadays. It turns out he's lived in London since before Dire Straits formed. I'd have never have guessed; Tyneside references have abounded in his music throughout. (The title track of Sailing to Philadelphia is about Mason and Dixon, of Line fame; Dixon, it transpires, was from County Durham.)
This makes me feel better about continuing to set stories in Newcastle and Edinburgh when I live in London myself. (Though I don't think I could manage another present-day story in Edinburgh; now I've no longer got any reason to go back to Scotland, I've lost touch with the Scots worldview, culture and dialect.)
(I also discovered from the above article that Knopfler's father is Jewish, which I didn't know. It doesn't say whether his mother [front right] is, but she was my headmistress at the (then) Newcastle Jewish Day School in 1979–80.)
