It was, on reflection, not a sensible idea to embark into a three day yomtov/Shabbos combo with the heating off.

Come מוצאי שבת, I turn the heater on and half a year's dust burning off the element sets the smoke detector off...

Now I'm back to the two-winter pattern of cold feet—no matter how high I turn the heating, this place leaks heat so fast I'm never warm from the knees down. But, after over a year of trying to talk the management association into letting me double-glaze the flat (which would require doing the whole block of six), during which they changed their mind more times than I can remember, I've finally given up, and have ordered secondary glazing. This winter, doggamn it, I am going to be warm from the knees down. Unless, of course, it transpires the non-window bits of external wall still lose sufficient heat to outweigh the heater...

I've afraid that I've been using the low-tech answer to the problem for years: my desk has a blanket under it so I can wrap my legs and feel snugly and warm.

I've had a jumper draped over my legs, but that doesn't work perfectly... and in any case, even if I had a blanket, that wouldn't work well for when I have guests.

In any case, the discovery this morning that my top window was not completely latched shut might have had something to do with how the temperature seemed to come down so fast. (On Tuesday I was wearing a T-shirt; last night I had the heater on full for a while, with me wearing my thickest jumper!)

Thick socks? Slippers? Shoes? (You could keep a separate pair of indoor shoes if you don't like outdoor shoes on the carpets...)

I was already wearing shoes, but hopefully the problem will go away once I get the place secondary glazed.

"Lhude sing cuccu;" and if I didn't know the reference what was I doing using that line as a title in the first place? ;^)
